Andiamo in Italia (Italian for Beginners)

Course Description​: This course is designed to give students new to Italian a basic comprehension of the general structure of the language, and to familiarize them with the use of written and spoken Italian. It will introduce general aspects of Italian culture. Students will build a basic vocabulary and will practice speaking, listening and writing in Italian.

Level:​ This course is intended for beginners as well as for students who have some knowledge of Italian and would like to review the basics.
Textbook:Instructor will provide materials, however a copy of Chiarissimo Uno might be helpful.

INSTRUCTOR

Silvia Abbiati

Silvia M. Abbiati was born and raised in Milano, Italy, where she received her B.A. in Foreign Languages and Literatures (summa cum laude), and her M.A. degree in Applied Linguistics / Translation Studies. After graduating, she moved to the United States where she worked as a computational linguist before receiving her M.S. degree in Organizational Communication, Learning and Design from Ithaca College in 2002.  Silvia is also ABD in Translation Studies. Her areas of study include translation pedagogy, translation into a second language, and modern translation of medieval texts. She is currently translating an Italian medieval poem that has never been translated into English before.       

Silvia is interested in producing pedagogical material. She has co-authored an intermediate-level Italian workbook and lab manual, and she is a contributing writer to an elementary-level Italian textbook and to an intermediate-level Italian book. Silvia is also a freelance translator, and she has published several Italian translations of English, French, and Spanish texts.           

Silvia has been teaching Italian, French, and a Medieval class at the college level since 2000. She also loves cooking, gardening, hiking, snorkeling, volunteering, and spending time with her beautiful family.
