Homer's Odyssey, Book 5: The Journey from Ogygia (Intermediate-Advanced Greek Reading)

Course Description: In this reading group, we will read about Odysseus' life with Calypso on the island of Ogygia, learn quite a bit about ship-building, and then follow our hero as he starts to voyage home. Overall, we will cover a bit more than 500 lines, including the entirety of book 5 (493 lines) and the introduction to Nausicaa at the beginning of book 6. Classes will be dedicated to reading and translating the text, and to discussing the broader themes therein. While this is an ongoing Homeric reading group, newcomers (especially newcomers to Homer) are always very welcome.

Level: This course is intended for students with upper-Intermediate to advanced reading knowledge of Ancient Greek.

INSTRUCTOR

Marcello Lippiello

Marcello Lippiello has been participating in the Telepaideia program since its inception nearly a decade ago, and is proud to be starting his eighth year as a Telepaideia Instructor. He was born and raised in the Bronx, New York, where he received his B.A. in Classical Languages and Theology from Fordham University. He has long had an interest in conversational Latin, earning a Graduate Certificate in Latin Studies from the University of Kentucky's Institutum Studiis Latinis Provehendis in 2005, along with master's degrees in classical languages and classical studies from Kentucky and from Duke University. He is also an alumnus of LGiG 2013 and 2014 (where he played Tiresias in the Bacchae), and has participated in a number of other conversational Greek and Latin workshops through the Polis Institute and through SALVI, including the most recent Synodos Hellenike in July of 2022. He has taught undergraduate college courses in all levels of Latin and Greek at several institutions, including Christendom College in Virginia and the Pontifical College Josephinum in Ohio. He lives with his family in Danbury, Connecticut.
