Bede's Ecclesiastical History (Intermediate-Advanced Latin Reading)

Course Description: The product of one of the greatest historians of the Middle Ages, Bede's Ecclesiastical History recounts the Christianization of Britain and the political machinations of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms. This reading course will focus on selections from Books 4 and 5 of the Ecclesiastical History, and will examine miracle stories, the Synod of Whitby (at which the English people formally rejected Celtic Christianity in favour of obedience to Rome), the song of Caedmon, a vision of Hell, and Adomnán's account of his visit to the Holy Land. Interaction with the manuscripts of this work will be a feature of our reading.


Level: This course is intended for students with intermediate to advanced knowledge of Latin. No specific knowledge of Medieval Latin is expected.

John Weretka

John Weretka holds undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications in musicology, medieval history, art history, theology, and Latin, and is currently a doctoral student at the University of Divinity (Australia), researching the medieval liturgical commentary. John works in the early music stream in the Faculty of Music at the University of Melbourne and is the convenor of the University’s Medieval Latin Reading Group.
