An Introduction to Dante's Inferno: Cantos 25-34 (In Translation)

Course Description: We will be concluding our reading of Dante’s first canticle, preparing to “riveder le stelle” (see the stars again). The class is intended for those who have already read the first 24 cantos of Inferno; if you are interested in joining for the first time, contact the instructor ( hook@paideia- institute.org ).

DETAILS

Level: Experience reading Italian and/or pre-modern literature are ideal, but not required. If there is demand for it, the course can be supplemented with an additional break-out session for Italian-readers (circa 30 minutes).
Textbook: The Durling & Martinez facing translation (Oxford UP).

INSTRUCTOR

Kristen Hook

Kristen is a Ph.D. student in UC Berkeley’s department of Italian Studies, where she also received an M.A. Prior to graduate study, she earned a B.A. in Italian Studies and Latin from the American University of Rome, worked for Paideia’s Rome office, and participated in FIDEM’s program in Medieval manuscript studies.

She specializes in late-Medieval and Renaissance literature and philosophy, with a background in Dante studies. Her current work is on the reception of Guido Cavalcanti in the circle of Marsilio Ficino.
