Ekkehard of Saint Gall, Waltharius (Intermediate-Advanced Latin Reading)

Course Description: One of the most significant Latin courtly epics of the early High Middle Ages, Ekkehard's Waltharius tells the story of the knight Waltharius, his paramour Hiltgund, their period as hostages in the land of the Huns, their return, and the epic battle that Waltharius fights with Gunther, Hagen, and their men. It is a vividly and often humorously told story, in which the author wears his Classical erudition on his sleeve.


Level: Intermediate to Advanced Latin reading. No prior knowledge of Medieval Latin is assumed.

John Weretka

John Weretka holds undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications in musicology, medieval history, art history, theology, and Latin, and is currently a doctoral student at the University of Divinity (Australia), researching the medieval liturgical commentary. John works in the early music stream in the Faculty of Music at the University of Melbourne and is the convenor of the University’s Medieval Latin Reading Group.
