Koine Greek: The Art of Philemon (Intemediate-Advanced Greek Reading)

Thurs., 12pm (U.S. Eastern Time)

*Please note that this course will run only if two or more students enroll.

Course Description: This course is an in-depth analysis of the use of rhetoric (the art of persuasion) in the Christian New Testament letter of Philemon. It focuses on the extraordinary rhetorical use of Koine Greek within the letter, with reference to relevant historical and cultural aspects of the letter. The rhetoric used in Philemon is a powerful tool. By understanding the argumentative structure of the letter, one’s understanding is greatly enriched concerning all of the letters of the New Testament as well as other classical texts. This course further provides an overview of Paul’s rhetoric in general, by looking at some of his other epistles, such as Galatians, Ephesians, and Colossians.

INSTRUCTOR

Louise-Mari Muller

I am currently busy with my MA in Ancient Languages with Latin at the North-West University in South Africa. I also obtained both my BA Ancient Languages and BA Honours Ancient Languages degrees (cum laude) at the same institute. I have a great passion for both Greek and Latin, but my interests reach all the way from the Akkadian language to French to Afrikaans poetry. I also participated in the 2019 Living Latin in Rome program.
