Course Description: This class will read and translate what many consider the last great work of Ancient Greek literature, Longus’s second-century AD pastoral romance novel. Close attention will be paid to grammar/syntax and to the sophisticated literary structure and rhetorical effects of this masterpiece of “poetic prose.”


Level: This course is intended for students with intermediate to advanced knowledge of Ancient Greek.

Constantine Hadavas

Constantine Hadavas is an associate professor of Greek, Latin and Ancient Mediterranean Studies at Beloit College (WI). He holds degrees from Oberlin College (B.A. in Ancient Greek) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Ph.D. in Classical Philology). The author of a dozen commentaries on Greek and Latin texts, his primary pedagogical interest is in helping students make the transition from first-year language study to reading some of the more fascinating works of ancient and medieval literature.
