Introductory Intensive Latin for Reading and Speaking w/Sweet

Course Description: This course serves as an intensive introduction to the Latin language with a focus on reading fluency and the use of oral Latin. Students will learn learn the following skills: basic greetings and farewells, how to ask/answer rudimentary questions, describe themselves and their families, express their basic preferences, likes/dislikes, the use of rudimentary grammar vocabulary to ask about, speak about and read a text without resorting to the use of English. By the end of the course students can also be expected to be familiar with the following grammatical items: Latin noun and pronoun morphology, the present tense of verbs in the active and passive voices including deponents as well as a number of irregular verbs.

Level: Beginner, no previous experience with the language required.
Textbook: Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata, Volume I: Familia Romana, Instructor will provide other materials.

Michael D. Sweet

Michael "Meletus" Sweet teaches Latin full time to students from Kindergarten to 6th grade at Hyde Park School, a public school in Cincinnati, OH, and privately tutors students in person and online. He received his B.A. in Philosophy at Hiram College, as well as Master's Degrees in Philosophy and Latin Literature from Kent State University. He has also been a participant in the Paideia Institute’s Living Latin in Rome, Living Latin in Paris, Living Latin in New York, as well as SALVI’s Rusticatio OmnibusRusticatio Veteranorum, and Bidua in addition to many other Living/Spoken Latin events over the last 6 years.
