Vergil's Eclogues (Intermediate-Advanced Latin Reading)

Course Description: Archetypes of the pastoral tradition, harbingers of the Augustan cultural project, and some of the most beautiful and mysterious poems ever written: all of this, and more, could be said in praise of the Eclogues, Vergil's first published collection of verse. Join me in reading all ten of them, one per week of the fall term.

Level: Intermediate +. The course is intended for those who have studied Latin grammar and have some experience reading continuous texts.

Jay Kardan holds degrees in classics from Swarthmore College and Yale University. He recently retired from the classics department at Randolph College, where he taught the full range of courses in Greek, Latin, and classical civilization.
