Dante Alighieri, Monarchia (Advanced Latin/Italian Reading)
Saturday., 9am (U.S. Eastern Time)
Course Description: We will keep on with Dante's Monarchia from chapter V of the first book. Participants will read both the Latin original and either Shaw's facing English translation, or Ronconi's facing Italian translation (or the two of them). The purpose of the meetings is to use an advanced level of the Latin or Italian language to reflect together on the contents of the work with a focus on Dante's formal approach to the political theme of monarchy and his method of analysis and reasoning. The secondary intent in reading the work is to see whether it contains modes of intellectual inquiry that are still relevant and indirectly applicable to contemporary issues. We will also go on drafting a written summary of the reflections developed on the contents for possible reference in the institute archives. Personal contributions and conversation about the text will be in English or Italian or both.
