Rotswitha of Gandersheim: Callimachus (Intermediate-Advanced Latin Reading)

Fri., 8pm (U.S. Eastern Time)

Course Description: Hailed by German Humanist Conrad Celtes as ‘the sibyl of the Rhein’, German abbess Rotswitha of Gandersheim was the first person since antiquity to write a full-length play in Latin. Planned as Christian responses to Terence’s comedies, Rotswitha’s plays are written in an elegant Latin and valorise the Christian virtues of chastity, forbearance, and self-restraint in the face of persecution. Callimachus’ lurid storyline, one of the ultimate sources for Romeo and Juliet, deals with Drusiana’s commitment to chastity in the face of unwanted attention from Callimachus.
