Sophocles, Antigone (Intermediate Greek Reading)
Mon., 11am (U.S. Eastern Time)
Course Description : In this class we will read one of the most famous of ancient tragedies: Sophocles’ Antigone. Our goal will be to read the play in its entirety, focusing on selected passages in ancient Greek and filling in the gaps with the help of English translation(s). Depending on student’s interests we will also discuss topics related to the play like the role of women, the conflict of “divine” and “human law”, or modern receptions and retransformations of the Antigone (e.g. Carl Orff, Martin Heidegger, Anne Carson, ...).
